Once Human,Now Irken Ch. 14

Meg felt like she was walking on air that morning. She couldn't have been more happier if she'd tried, walking hand in hand with her best friend, smiling and chattering happily. Absolutely nothing could top this feeling.
Meg and Zim stepped into class together, beaming at the astonished faces staring at them.
"Meg! Meeeeeeeeg!"
Meg peered over the class, scanning the room for the person who was calling her name, when she saw Brittany running towards her with tears in her eyes. "MEEEEG!!!" she wailed, pouncing on the surprised Irken girl and hugging her tightly. "Britt?" Meg asked sympathetically, putting her arms around Brittany's shoulders. "What's wrong?" Brittany looked up, tears running down her face. "Dib said you, like, got hit by a car!" she sobbed, rubbing her eyes and fanning her face. "He said that you had, like, died!" Meg glanced nervously at Zim, who looked as equally uneasy. "No, I nearly got hit, but luckily I didn't." The Irken girl replied, turning and looking back at Brittany. "Is Dib here yet?" Brittany nodded, still wiping at her eyes. "He's at the principal's office, he was, like, REALLY upset..." Meg's eyes widened slightly. "Really?" She asked, glancing at the door nervously. Miss Bitters hadn't arrived yet, and Meg decided it was better if she didn't hear this conversation. "Yeah, he told us all you'd been hit and, like, died." Brittany continued, still wiping her eyes desperatley "We were all, like, worried about you and Zim." Zim looked up from his desk, his eyes widened in surprise. "But now..." Brittany sobbed "You're here, you're both here, and you're alive and I'm so GLAD!!!" She broke down into more tears, bending her head and hiding her face in her hands, her long blonde hair protecting her like a curtain. "Oh Britt, it's ok...." Meg pulled the sobbing girl into her arms, holding her tightly. Tears formed in her eyes as she tried to soothe the crying girl in her arms. Zim looked away, trying to look like he couldn't care less, but he couldn't help blinking back a few tears.

At break-time, Meg was sitting under a tree in the shade, eating a sandwich. After Brittany had eventually calmed down, everything had more or less gone back to normal. Well, all except Zim. He'd been a bit quieter than usual, which was unlike him. He hadn't even tried to answer questions in class, he didn't even kick up when Dib got top marks in a maths test, and Zim was bottom of the class.
As Meg pondered about this, nibbling on her sandwich, a shadow fell upon her. Confused, Meg looked up, and saw Zim standing in front of her. "Oh heya Zim!" She smiled "I thought you were Dib then!" The Invader said nothing, just staring at her. Meg started to feel a little uneasy with Zim staring at her like that. "Zim?" she asked, tilting her head in confusion, as Zim sat down beside her, still silent. "Brittany not here?" he asked quietly, still staring into the distance. Meg raised an eyebrow. "No, she's with the other girls, why?" Zim just carried on staring at the children on the playground. "No reason..." he replied, not blinking. Meg sighed. "You're jealous, aren't you?" "No!" Zim replied "I'm concerned.." Meg gave a nervous laugh. "Why?" She asked, rubbing the back of her head. Zim sighed heavily, looking down at the grass. "Well, if you have Brittany's trust, you'll tell her you're Irken, won't you?"
Meg gasped, so shocked by what Zim said that she started choking on her sandwich, going bright red in the face. "Say WHAT?!" she asked in between gasps of air. "You're going to tell her, aren't you?" Zim replied, leaning forwards and thumping Meg on the back. Meg stopped choking, taking deep breaths and wiping the tears from her eyes. "Zim..." she spoke, a serious tone to her voice. "I know how scared you are of being found out." She put her hands on Zim's shoulders and gazed deeply into his lilac coloured eyes. "And I also know that if I told Brittany about me and you, she would blab it to the world, and we would be taken away to be experimented on in a matter of minutes. So I promised myself to never tell ANYONE about us." She smiled warmly down at Zim. "And besides, we're best friends! I'd never do anything to hurt you." Zim looked up into her chocolate coloured eyes, his squeedily-spooch tying itself up in knots. "I've....never had a best friend before.." he replied quietly, his cheeks going slightly pink. "Well, maybe I'm a first!" Meg giggled, kneeling down, putting her skinny green arms around the Invader and hugging him tightly. Zim smiled, hugging her back, the sunlight shining through the tree's leaves and basking the Irkens in light.
